• ABS contracts for non-commercial academic research – two complementary models. The ABS team of the Swiss Academy of Sciences in co-operation with the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá held a joint information event during the ABS WG9 (the CBD ABS Working Group meeting) in Cali, Colombia on 23 March 2010.
The Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá presented its proposal of a "contrato marco" (framework contract) for Colombian research institutes aiming at doing research on national territory. The Swiss Academy of Sciences presented its draft ABS contract especially designed for noncommercial academic research. Both contracts will be discussed with the audience. The overall aim is to find solutions acceptable to provider and user countries in order to enable noncommercial academic research.

• Science-policy round table on "Access to genetic resources and benefit sharing – Challenges and opportunities for biodiversity science" held on 15 October 2009 during the DIVERSITAS Open Science Conference in Cape Town, South Africa (http://www.diversitas-osc.org/). The round table was organized by the Swiss Academy of Sciences and Prof. Peter Linder, University of Zürich.
The round table discussed the impact of ABS on non-commercial research and the significance of the ongoing CBD negotiations for academia. Specialists presented ABS information and news on the current political processes. Representatives and researchers from developing and industrialized countries stated viewpoints and reported on their experience with the ABS system. (ABS_RoundTable_OSC2_flyer, PDF, 250KB)

• Evaluation of the SCNAT publication «Access and Benefit Sharing – Good Practice for Academic Research on Genetic Resources»
In order to improve the use and applicability of the Good Practice brochure, the Swiss Academy of Sciences SCNAT carries out a survey among its users. We kindly ask you to participate and fill out the questionnaire on the usefulness and applicability of the brochure «Access and Benefit Sharing – Good Practice for Academic Research on Genetic Resources». This will require no more than 10-15 minutes. Your opinion is important to us. Your input will support our efforts to improve the information on ABS for scientists.
